Last Friday, several student groups from around campus set up shop in White Plaza to recruit new members and to make their presence known on campus. The following groups tabled at the activities fair.

Stanford Women in the Kitchen worked to raise awareness of the barriers keeping women from pursuing their essential roles in the kitchen.

The Bing Underseas Studies program promoted their new curriculum which features guest lecturers such as Sponge Bob Square Pants and student favorite Nemo, the Clown Fish.

Alongside Bing Underseas Studies was the Fishing Club. Unfortunately, all members of the club had gone fishing.

The Mile High Club hoped to find people interested in learning how to maximize the enjoyment of their airplane flights. The club placed a special emphasis on Post-9/11 mile high club tactics, styles, and techniques.

Gaieties also made an appearance at the fair, working to recruit “family friendly” writers for Gaieties 2011. Included at the Gaieties table was a sample script, fully redacted and safe for all toddlers and minorities.

The fair also included a community service group, Tutoring for the Over privileged, which sends tutors to West Palo Alto to teach wealthy children how to navigate through complex subdivision side streets and how to get their maid to do their laundry.

The Pillow Fight Club was one of the more popular clubs at the fair. It worked to recruit new members by initiating pillow fights with nearby pedestrians. (Don’t worry, the rules of the club prohibit headshots and down feathers—feathers poke out of pillows and can really hurt)

On the academic side of the fair, advocates for the new Love Major were on hand to explain the requirements of the new major, including ME 302: Making Love and Chem 22: Love Potions. Similarly, recruiters for the Pen 15 club, also known as UPenn Class of 15 were passing out Pen15 wrist bands and informational fliers.

The Mailing List club worked hard at recruiting, offering new members the opportunity to subscribe to thousands of lists and to hear about the newest Viagra sales and Nigerian prince scams.

For the hungrier fair participants, Club Sandwich provided some well-needed relief—offering free chips and Ike’s to potential members.

Next to Club Sandwich was Club That Can’t Handle Me Right Now, for the super-cool kids of Stanford.

The more industrial students stopped by the table of Silicon Valley’s hottest new startup, Jitterbunk. Jitterbunk is the first startup to connect people in new and previously unexplored ways (Check it out at jitterbunk.com).

Finally, the infamous Flipside Segway was present at the Activities Fair. As part of Segwayers of Stanford, the Segway representative worked to convince bicyclists to give up their bikes in favor of a more modern, high-tech mode of transporation.

Every year, the band rallies all the libraries on campus. But this year the administration cancelled the library rally. The band sent an email out to inform its members that the rally had been cancelled, but one band member, O’Leary, forgot to check his email. He showed up anyway to rock out and bring the funk to the students of Stanford.

WHITE PLAZA–Last Friday, Stanford students came together to table in White Plaza to promote some of the lesser known groups on campus. The following groups tabled at the activities fair:

The White Male Community Center came to White Plaza to help push for their special fees campaign, and received the 24 signatures they needed to make it on the ballot.

The Resume Building Club made an appearance and tried to encourage new members to join by telling them that “they too could be presidents of Resume Building Club, just like everyone else.”

The Stanford Seventh Man Club was blasting the Space Jam soundtrack as well as getting tons of new members to be fans of the basketball fans. If you were there at 12:20, you may have caught them playing their wildly popular game, “Who’s Your Favorite Fan?”

Stanford Women in Engineering made an appearance at the fair; however, they did not have any people at their table.

The Breakfast Club was one of the most popular groups, with a mission to get together three times a week to eat breakfast. Special guest members include Captain Crunch and Dean Julie.

AIDS awareness groups came to tell us the measures we can take to avoid contracting FACE AIDS, KOOL AIDS, and HEARING AIDS. Their advice: wash your hands.

The Psi Phi fraternity was at the fair shot-gunning Mountain Dew and promoting future rush events like Klingon Boggle and Binary Scrabble.

The LGBTQSAPSUDECTINTSSFMVX group tabled to increase the rights of people not accepted by the LGBTQ community. They advocated for trisexual rights as well as the rights of those sexually oriented towards true north.

The FroSoCo Awareness Club was handing out maps, dispelling myths about the wild FroSoCoan, and educating attendees about how to defend themselves.

The 2210 Temporal Study Abroad group gave those passing by a glimpse into education of the future.

The Pro-Warming group, George W. Bush fan club, and the Club You Can’t Leave were also signing up new members.

Overall, it was an exciting event for all who attended, and another demonstration of the great diversity of Stanford students’ extracurricular interests.

Sarah Palin recently gave a speech at the National Tea Party Convention, and wrote a few notes on her hand to remember the important talking points. Palin has been giving speeches all around the country and has a lot to remember. We here at the Flipside were able to get exclusive photos of Sarah Palin’s hands. What important things does a political figure like her need to remember?
